A protection from abuse order is a civil order that provides protection from harm by family or household members, sexual or intimate partners or persons with whom you have a child in common.

PFAs are filed typically when there is a perceived threat of danger to one member of the family by another member. However in many cases, there are often misunderstandings that take place or where the individual who filed the PFA has a change of heart.

If a PFA is filed against you or a loved one, that could have a myriad of consequences including but not limited to being forced to leave your own home, being denied access to see family members, being ordered to pay financial restitution and even health insurance payments of the filer of the PFA, being forced to surrender any firearms you may own – whether licensed or unlicensed.
